Pathway in Cancer--Apoptosis Signaling

Apoptosis is the term given to the processof programmed cell death that occurs in multicellular organisms.  Biochemical events lead to characteristicmorphologicalcell changes and death. These changes include cell blebbing, cellshrinkage, nuclear fragmentation, chromatin condensation, and chromosomal DNAfragmentation.  It is usuallyadvantageous for a cell to go through apoptosis to assist its progressionthrough a normal life cycle. Apoptosis produces apoptotic bodies which aresmall cell fragments that phagocytescan engulf and quickly remove before thecell's escaping contents cause toxicity in the surrounding cellularenvironment.
